A slow weekend on the R103
Skip the N3 and take the old road north: falls, history, lunch and a fire by sundown.
Leave the N3 at Howick and the old road takes over: two lanes winding past dams, stud farms and stone churches. Start at the falls, then stop at the Nelson Mandela Capture Site on your way north.
Lunch can be anywhere between Lidgetton and Nottingham Road. The trick is not to plan it too tightly. Studios, delis and farm stalls are signposted from the tar, and some of the best are down a short gravel road.
By late afternoon, find a country inn with a fire and a view. Day two can be the Karkloof forest or the drive west to the Kamberg, or both if you start early.
