Reading the rocks at Game Pass
Why a shelter in the Kamberg became a key to understanding San rock art.

The paintings at Game Pass Shelter include a dying eland and human figures that researchers have linked to trance and healing practices. That interpretation changed how rock art across southern Africa is understood, which is why the site is often called the “Rosetta Stone” of San rock art.
Visits are guided only and are booked through reception at Kamberg Nature Reserve. The walk is moderate and climbs through grassland with big views of the escarpment.
Please never touch, wet or trace the paintings. They have lasted thousands of years and are easily damaged.
