Mooi River is the seat of Mpofana Local Municipality, at about 1,389 m on the N3 and the Johannesburg-Durban railway; the station now handles goods only, and there is an N3 toll plaza at the town. The town economy is based on retail, tourism and support for local farming, mainly dairy and equine. Schools include Treverton Preparatory School and College (independent, on 270 ha) and Weston Agricultural College (public boys' agricultural school, founded 1914, on about 1,200 ha).
